Who Invented The Frisbee

Who invented Frisbee? Many inventions personalized have one or two inventors but in the case
of Frisbee, there are plentiful claims or stories behind its tale.
Today’s Frisbee evolved from Frisbie Baking Company’s pie tins. Some say that college
students living in New England played with these empty pie tins by tossing and catching it to
each other.

Here's a look at a clearer epic of Frisbee, and some of it's highlights.

1820 – An undergrad Yale student named Elihu Frisbie who played with tray collections by tossing them around the campus. According to some people, the word ‘Frisbee’ was coined from Elihu’s surname which was "Frisbie", the ‘ie’ of Frisbie was changed to ‘ee’ and became Frisbee. Although this was the surpassingly approved claim, it still met lots of protest.

1871-1958 – As mentioned above, the Frisbee was also believed to have originated from the Frisbie Baking Company. The companies name was engraved on the pie tins and they were delivered to the campuses of New England. Frisbee is then derived from the Frisbee Baking Company.
College students loved the pies and after they ravaged the pies, they would then play with the empty tins by tossing and catching them to one another. Many students found the game very whimsical and exciting so it became extraordinarily popular within many campuses in New England.

1948 – Two great fans of the ‘pie tins’ went on to make a plastic version of the "tin" and went on to call it the Pluto-platter.
It was then sold as toy to the toy market and at this time it did make a lot of sales. The Pluto-Platter proved to be popular at this time as it so happens that UFOs were also quite popular that time.
The two people responsible for creating the plastic version of the Frisbee were Walter Frederick Morrison and Warren Franscioni. However, it was only Warren Franscioni who went on to pursue the project as Franscioni had decided to leave.
It became quite obvious that most people thought that playing with the Pluto-platter was far better than the pie tins and therefore they patronized it. Besides this, the new plastic toy flew higher than the pie tins and it exhibited accuracy and speed due to the fact it was lighter.
It was soon after this Walter Frederick Morrison patented his toy and named it the ‘Morrison Slope’.

1955 – In 1955 Wham-O, the hula hoop manufacturer, convinced Morrison to sell his toy design, the "Morrison Slope" and rights to the toy.

1957 – By this year, Wham-O proceeded to produce the Pluto-platter.

1958 – While Walter Frederick Morrison managed to get piles of dollars for his toy design, the Frisbee Baking Company, shut down.

1964 – Unfortunately the sales of the Pluto-platter started to go down, the company Wham-O decided to rename the Pluto-Platter and then re-introduced the toy. When the company found out about the story behind the Frisbee they decided to introduce the toy as a new sports game and called it ‘frisbei-ing’. Hence the players of the game called the toy a Frisbee.

In modern times, there are many different kinds of Frisbee as well as Ultimate Frisbee being just one of them. Ultimate Frisbee derived from ‘frisbei-ing’.

The Frisbee has undergone a magnitude of modifications and changes. You can also look at it as there being no specific inventor of the sport or game as over time it was in effect created from the joint efforts of various companies and people. Significantly it was in the years of 1820 to 1964 that the Frisbee was being invented, designed and modified.

Like most games. toys and gadgets, it's quite interesting to know how they came about and if you think about it, had one of the individuals or companies and their joint efforts not been around at the start, then Frisbee and the exciting game it is wouldn't exist today.
